battle for the universe‎ > ‎

reviews

Battle For The Universe is a space shoot-em-up game. It has 3d rendered graphics, along with digitzed sounds. You can play against the computer or against real humans over either an appletalk or tcp/ip connection. The best part of this game is the ability to play people over the internet. This means that you will never lose interest in the game because your opponents will be coming up with smarter and smarter tricks. The game is great fun to play, and can keep you occupied for hours. The map is so huge, you have radar and a overview of the whole map in the upper left side of your screen. You also have tons of different powerups, ones that can disguise or cloak you, or provide an ally, or dispel the opponents shields. I really enjoyed this game, mainly because it's not impossible, it just takes a little practice. The game costs twenty dollars, which is a bargain for such a great game.

Battle for the Universe, a top-down, scrolling screen space shooter from Misty Software. Combine Bolo with Escape Velocity, and you get Battle for the Universe. You also get a game which predicts many hours of entertaining gameplay. BFTU is playable by one person on his/her Mac, and supports multi-player over the net or with another networked Mac. Since BFTU is largely a multi-player game, if we want to enjoy this game to the fullest we must get other Mac users to download it. This way we don't have to sit at our Macs waiting, waiting for another user to connect. Also, I am considering a multi-player tournament using BFTU (complete with prizes), so please stay tuned for more word on that - and in the mean time, download Battle for the Universe, and get used to the controls and gameplay. Also, expect a full review of the game, once enough Macs are running it to get some real games going.

If you loved Escape Velocity, then you will love Battle for the Universe. While playing Escape Velocity, the one thing that was always going through my mind was wouldnÕt it be cool if this was multi-player. Battle for the Universe is a lot like Escape Velocity. You are no longer a merchant though. Your only objective is to annihilate the other player and his bases. Instead of warping from system to system trading to build up your arsenal, you tell your bases to build your weapons for you. Once you are strong enough to attack, you fly in to battle with your enemies. But beware, you may be attacked when you least expect it. Learning how to use special weapons with your normal arsenal is the key to survival in this game. And a good escape plan is essential. You can either play against the computer, which I found a little dull. Or you can play against a friend through AppleTalk or TCP/IP. Multi-player games are great. Just try to find someone your skill level. I did find the HUD a little hard to read, and some of the key controls were a little awkward, but the graphics are excellent. Rating: A!
